In Edward’s words:
I don’t know how I could continue to live without your help. Bless you and all of your wonderful volunteers.
Edward is not living the life he had anticipated when he was 30, 40 or even 50. He left school as a young man, secured a job in the local plant, married his childhood sweetheart, had three children and paid weekly into his company’s pension fund.
The only time he was away from his family and work was when he was in the Philippines serving his country during World War II. Today, he is living alone in Middlesex County, since his wife passed away eight years ago and his children moved to California, South Carolina and Australia.
The monthly payments from social security and his pension are inadequate given today’s cost of living. He is struggling to stay in the home he has lived in for the past 60 years but often finds himself without funds to buy groceries, pay for heating oil or pay for transportation to West Haven Veterans’ Hospital. Fortunately, last year he called our office to ask for help.
Sadly Edward’s story is not unique…he is one of more than 375 elderly local residents, both women and men, we help by providing medical transportation, grocery shopping, minor home repairs, financial assistance and resource referrals. All of the services we provide are FREE. In fact, we are the only non profit organization in Connecticut that focuses on the needs of the elderly and does not charge for the valuable help we provide.
We truly appreciate the support you have given us in the past and sincerely hope that we can count on you again this year as we continue to provide this important service to the older residents living in your town. On behalf of Edward and me, we sincerely thank you for taking the time to read this letter and for recognizing the value of our small, local Agency.
I thank you again for your continued support and generosity.
Warmest Regards,
Diane Cummings
